PALMDALE - A 17-year-old girl was beaten and robbed by four teenage girls as she crossed the parking lot of the Del Taco restaurant at 25th Street East and Avenue S on Monday evening - an area that has seen increasing violence lately.
A witness saw the beating and tried to follow the suspects as they fled the area, said Dave Miklos, public information officer for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The four suspects were described as black females between 15 and 18. The suspects approached the 17-year-old victim at 8 p.m. and demanded her backpack as she walked through the Del Taco parking lot, investigators said.

The suspects then "punched her on the head and face several times, which caused her to fall to the ground," Miklos said.

The suspects reportedly were carrying long, foam pool flotation devices at the time of the assault. The four got away with $40 cash, miscellaneous books and a Social Security card, Miklos said.

A witness attempted to follow the suspects' vehicle, a gray, mid- 1990s model van. The witness followed the van and watched as the driver dropped suspects off at various locations but then lost sight of it.

The victim suffered bruises and cuts, but investigators did not know if she was treated for her injuries.

A large number of people pass through the area daily - there are shopping centers on both sides of 25th Street East on the north side of Avenue S and a large video rental store, gas station and minimart on the same corner as the Del Taco.

Last month, a 19-year-old man was injured in what deputies said was a gang-related shooting.

A gunman shot and wounded Clarence Jackson of Palmdale near the busy intersection of Avenue S and 30th Street East as he walked on the south side of Avenue S. Two men pulled up to Jackson in a large, dark- colored sport-utility vehicle. The suspects shouted gang-related slogans just before one of them pulled out a semiautomatic handgun and shot the victim in the lower abdomen, investigators said.

The victim ran across the street to the Wienerschnitzel restaurant after he was shot. Employees there called sheriff's deputies.

Across the street from the restaurant, deputies recovered four spent shell casings from a .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun.
